A wonderful early pattern is showcased on this very graphic red and white quilt. Just two fabrics were used: a red and dark pink pattern, and solid white. This indicates the maker was probably from an affluent family as enough of this fabric was purchased to create this quilt rather than making use of “scrap” fabrics on hand.

Blocks measure 6 ½” square and are both hand and machine pieced. Curved pieces are more difficult to execute well so the creator of this quilt was an experienced seamstress. Quilting is stitched entirely by hand in echo outline and parallel lines throughout. The backing is white and the ½” binding is treadle machine topstitched in the same red fabric as used on the front. The end result is a harmonious and graphic piece of textile art.

This is a wonderful quilt for use on a bed or would be equally as beautiful hung on a wall. Professionally hand washed by Betsey and in excellent condition. Quilts are always sent on approval.

SOLD

A host of early patterns have come together in this Civil War era creation to produce a jewel of an antique quilt! This two color quilt uses a single Turkey red miniature floral print paired with an off-white cotton. A unique quilt in which the designer has alternated the 7 ½” Diamond in a Square and Ohio Star blocks to create the central design which is surrounded by a 2 ¾” Geese in Flight border. This creates movement and interest for the viewer's eye while still maintaining a sense of serenity.

An off-white linen backing folds over to the front and is treadle machine stitched down to form the ¼” binding. The treadle machine binding, in addition to the purchased calico yardage, indicates the family was of very comfortable means. The hand quilting includes outline, cross and parallel lines spaced ¾” apart.

This is a wonderfully soft yet graphic presentation which showcases the quilter’s imagination and pleasing design sense. This piece has been lovingly used and cared for, however it does have some slight shadowing, even after multiple washings, which we choose to call character. It in no way diminishes the beauty of this quilt. Professionally had washed by Betsey. Quilts are always sent on approval!

Festoon your home this holiday season with the perfect antique hand appliqued quilt for art on your wall, bed or decorating in general. In gorgeous solid Turkey red and overdyed green you just can’t get any more festive. 16 hand appliqued lilies dance among flower buds on a pristine white ground. Solid Turkey red jabots and bows circle the white border measuring 12 3/4 inches on the side borders and 10 inches top and bottom (quilt shown horizontally in photo). Finely done hand quilting consists of outline on each appliqué, 6, 7 and 8 petaled floral motifs in differing sizes and leaf filled trailing vines in the white background. The quilt has a white backing and is finished with a ¼ inch hand applied white binding.

This piece is extremely ordered and well planned but gives the impression of free spirited gaity, emphasized by the “scattering” of appliqued buds and the various sizes of the hand quilted multi-petaled flowers and free flowing leafy vines.

This lovely quilt would be the focal point of your holiday decorating or any time of year. Professionally hand washed by Betsey.

This Grande Dame of antique quilts is both elegantly sophisticated and graphically wonderful! Magnificently hand appliqued and hand quilted this piece has sixteen delicate and detailed florals in Turkey red, overdyed green and double pink and yellow calicoes all softly muted with age. Each flower has multiple layers of appliqued and reverse appliqued petals, leaf filled stems and 7 flower buds tipped with crewel embroidered highlights. Surrounding this bountiful garden is a 7 ½ inch border with an undulating floral vine a mere 3/16 of an inch in width and filled with appliqued buds and flowers of its own. Just imagine the levels of skill and patience needed to complete this work of art!

Finely hand quilted wreaths surrounded by ½ inch wide cross hatching fill the white joining blocks while triple lines spaced ½ inch apart fill the background in the appliquéd blocks and border. A sophisticated design in classic red and white! This completely hand appliqued beauty has grace as well as stunning graphics. Lovingly used this quilt shows some fade in the Turkey red which does not diminish its timeless appeal. Sixteen 11 ½ inch appliquéd medallions, each with 4 hearts in the center, are surrounded by an 8 1/2 inch border crowned with four long floral tipped swags.

Skillful hand quilting consists of cross hatching in the appliqued medallion squares, double parallel lines in the swag border accented with teardrop quilting. There is double line echo quilting outlining the white triangles and a feather quilting design radiating out from the centers of each white joining block. Wow !

The backing and 1/4 " binding are the same fine white cotton as used on the front . A lovely work of art, softly faded with time – we should all age as gracefully. Professionally hand washed by Betsey.

Q8528 Red and Green Ocean Waves
c.1880
81 x 81
Massachusetts
$1,800

Arriving just in time for the holidays, this graphically wonderful Ocean Waves quilt has been used just enough to give it the comforting softness of age while still maintaining its excellent condition. Ocean Waves is a very “North Atlantic Coast” pattern, usually seen in some combination of blues and whites, or scrap assortments on a solid color background. This quilt is more unusual, having been hand pieced from Turkey red, overdyed green calicoes, and a variety of red plaids.

Please note that the Turkey red is a blue red, not an orange red; this is quite a difficult color to accurately photograph. The 6 ¼ inch Turkey red joining blocks have been hand quilted with double lines, alternating direction from block to block. The 3 x 2 ¼ x 2 ¼ inch triangles have been hand outline quilted. The 5 ¾ inch border is a deeper overdyed green calico, and includes a 3/8 separately applied Turkey red binding. The border has been quilted with diagonal double lines. The wholecloth backing is a wonderful burgundy floral with ecru flowers and tan highlights. Professionally hand washed by Betsey, this festive quilt is ready for your use!

What a beauty! Turkey red and white is always a favorite and this time of year it’s very festive as well. Organized and geometric this antique hand made and hand quilted piece makes a very graphic statement that will be the focus of any room.

The Garden Maze is a very early pattern originating in New England during the 1830’s which then migrated to Pennsylvania. All latticework strips in solid Turkey red fabric measure 1 ½ inches wide. The ¼ inch white binding is formed from the white backing being turned to the front and hand stitched. In excellent condition this crisp and beautiful quilt also has lovely quilting with outline used in the Turkey red, 1 ½ inch cross hatching in the white squares and diagonal lines in the oblongs.

A beautiful work of art to add to yours or a loved one’s collection…and just in time for the holidays! Like anything of true quality this quilt has only improved with age. The classic oak leaf pattern in Turkey red calico and solid overdyed green has softly mellowed with time and retains the beauty we look for in a traditional and very early red and green piece. The quilt’s softness tells us it was used, its excellent condition that it was cared for lovingly.

The work is finely executed and includes both hand appliqued and pieced fabrics with incredible Trapunto wreaths and fruit baskets set among the Turkey red and green oak leaves– please look at the detail images! Two sawtooth borders, one red and one green, surround a white 6 ½ inch border with lovely quilting consisting of ¾ inch bars each separated by three diagonal lines 1/8 inch apart. Very fine interior quilting gives a beautiful stippling effect. The quilt is finished with a white linen backing and a separately applied ¼ inch white binding.

This is a piece any collector of fine textile art would treasure. Professionally hand washed by Betsey.

Whimsy and sophistication pair up to create the perfect piece of textile art for your collection! The striking and nicely balanced red and white palette in a block and frame pattern form small stages on which each fine hand embellishment can perform. This beautifully hand embroidered quilt includes such designs as owls with a smiling moon and stars, birds flying over a fish filled stream, figures with stately postures, lovely floral still lifes, frolicking animals and even a teapot, each embroidered in white on a 7 ¼ inch square red block set on point. 2 ¼ inch white bands with stylized leaves done in red embroidery connect the squares and form a beautiful frame around each block.

The gorgeous antique top, dated 1890, appears to have been finished as a quilt at a later date, c.1930 – 1950, believed to be by a family member. The backing is white muslin with a ¼ inch applied binding also in white and all hand quilting on this piece has been done in the ditch - the reason Betsey realized this quilt was finished at a later date. In excellent condition this is truly a beautiful piece of textile art. More family information available upon purchase.
