A glorious Civil War era Log Cabin quilt executed in wool and wool challis fabrics. Wonderfully graphic this antique beauty has triple borders in solid black and red wool challis. The maker’s wonderful sense of color placement and design make for an outstanding piece of antique textile art.
Log Cabin blocks approximately 8 1/2 inches square are foundation pieced in the Courthouse Steps or Sunshine & Shadow pattern. The blocks are executed in mostly solid hued wools and wool challis in predominantly blues, tans and blacks with some lovely multi hued plaids added for great effect. Red calico wool chimneys are approximately 1 1/4” square and add a visual pop, with the help of the gorgeous 2 1/4 inch solid red wool challis middle border. Two black wool challis borders surround the red border and measure 1 5/8 inches (outer) and 2 inches (inner). The quilt blocks are hand pieced with treadle machine stitched borders. Minimal hand quilting, visible from the back side, holds the layers together. The cotton backing is a beautiful rose, pink, olive, and brown large scale floral and bird print - see detail image. The 3/8 inch wide black wool challis binding is hand applied using the same fabric as the black borders.
In excellent condition this quilt has a few ‘original’ moth bites that do not detract from its beauty. This is a wonderfully graphic quilt for use on a bed or as art on a wall. Please talk to us about shipping this quilt to you on approval for viewing in the privacy of your home. |
