Q8809 Floral Applique with Vining Floral Border
80 x 93 (203.2 x 236.2 cm)
IN or PA
A gorgeous and very early quilt in Turkey red, overdyed green, double pink and cheddar showcasing a lovely array of appliqued flowers, buds, leaves and vines. This antique textile is also exquisitely hand quilted which adds another dimension of excellence to a beautifully designed and executed quilt. Large and graphic floral appliques dominate the center of the design. Each appliqued block measures approximately 28 inches square and contains a central multi petaled flower in Turkey red and double pink calico with solid cheddar centers. Blossoming out from this flower are four cheddar star points and four tulips pieced in solid Turkey red and double pink calico, then appliqued onto overdyed green patterned bases. Between the tulips are stems with leaves topped with yet more buds with layers of cheddar, Turkey red and double pink! Two additional half blocks measure 28 x 14 each. The tiniest of fine stitches were used to attach each layer of applique.
The central pattern is framed by a 10 1/2 inch border containing a meandering vine with appliqued tulips, buds, stems and leaves. Beautifully executed hand quilting features outline stitching for all appliques and diagonal 1/2” cross hatch stitching throughout. The addition of double line quilted hearts in the border indicate it was made for an anniversary or wedding. Backed in the same white as used on the front, this quilt is also beautifully framed by a 3/8” applied solid Turkey red binding.
