QT 26 Red Cross Quilt Top

This wonderful quilt top created with an original pattern depicts the Red Cross symbol. Making it even more American is the choice of colors – red, white and blue. This quilt top has a definite folk art flair with its irregular bar widths and free formed quilt squares. Is it of African American origin? It does have the elements we look for in true African American quilts; the strong use of symbols, bright colors, vertical piecing, and enlarged, very graphic designs. However, in this case we just don’t know. Another unknown is its original location.
The cross squares average 6 x 7 inches in size with the outer red and off white borders approximately 1 ¾ inches wide. Inner strips of the red, blue and off white vary in length and width. This is a very striking piece of textile art just waiting to be finished. Its bold color and graphics would make a strong statement for your home or office. Some foxing or discoloration is evident and should come out with its first wash when completed.
