CONSS1A Mint Condition Pulsating Blazing Star Quilt
c.1870
88 x 88 inches
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
$3,800
Graphic is an understatement. Yes, this is a mint condition antique
quilt that easily can be used on a bed. However, I see this as an
incredible piece of textile art. The quilt is incredibly graphic,
mind-bogglingly beautiful. When looking at the quilt, it appears that
there is fading in some of the corners. This is not fading, they just
used brown fabric of a different shade. You can easily tell this by the
change of color at the seam line. It is possible this quilt is
Mennonite. Throughout the quilt, each diamond has 2-1/2" sides. The
piece is both hand and machine pieced. It has a separately applied 7/8"
binding. There is a 1-3/4" border adjacent to the binding with
triangles that measure 2-1/2" x 1-3/4" x 1-3/4".
The outside blue
triangles surrounding the center square are outline stitched with
minuscule stitching. At first glance they appear to be machine quilted,
however one knows they are done by hand because of the spacing between
each stitch. The triangles throughout the quilt are quilted with an X
pattern, and quilted on one side. The rest of the quilt is quilted with
a pattern that looks like a continuous palm tree. Except for the
minuscule outline stitches around the blue triangles the rest of the
quilting is average. The backing of the quilt is comprised of two
absolutely exquisite 1870s fabrics. This mint quilt is one to be
purchased as a sunny piece of artwork for the graphics, not for the
quilting.
