One of the earliest Amish quilts I have ever had. I am calling this a
"checkerboard" design and wondering if it was the precursor to the
popular Trip Around The World design. The design is created completely
from wool Challis with the backing a fine brown cotton.
An astounding fact is that this early Amish quilt is hand pieced!! To
my knowledge this is one of only a very few Amish quilts that are hand
pieced and they are all 19th century. The piecing is, natually,
perfect, with the quilting outstanding. The 11-1/2" borders are quilted
with meandering vines. The inner green 3" border is quilted with
interlocking elongated ovals. The entire center, which is comprised of 2
3/4" squares, is crosshatched in a 1" grid on the diagonal.
The colors are very rich in a visual feeling.
