BGCS1 Original Folk Art Whirligig, Stars and Folky Flowers Quilt
Dated with minuscule embroidery stitches: 1826
73 x 77 inches
Baltimore, Maryland
$5,800
An original designed quilt Eliza created as a young child, obviously
with the help of her family. I say family because at that time quilting
was a family affair, and by the fabrics and design one can deduce that
this family was affluent. Gazing at the graphics of this quilt and
knowing where it was created, I feel it may be a precursor to the famous
Baltimore Album Quilts. Eliza would have attended a prestigious girls
school in Baltimore. Eliza, at the age of 13, stood alongside her
Father as Lafayette was welcomed to Baltimore.
It is hard to describe the design except to say happy! We do have
whimsical whirligigs, folk art flowers ..maybe Peonys..and a peony
blossom and stars...16 stars!
The fabrics used were the finest...Turkey Red, over dyed Green and a
fine quality white. The backing is a very fine linen. The 1/4"
separately applied binding was created from a tobacco dyed green that
oxidizes upon its very first wash.
The quilting is fantastic! We have echo quilting, vines, 3/8"
crosshatching, stippling and of coarse the embroidered date and
initials. My feeling is that the quilting was probably executed by
Eliza's Mother..but hard to believe that of a child...but, at that
time, perfection, due to discipline ans social status, was achieved at an
early age.
We have executed some limited restoration with same date fabrics and it is
labeled as such on the back.
Now organically hand washed and ready to be sent, with free shipping,
