CONJC2 Victorian Crazy Quilt
c.1930
73 x 85 inches
Massachusetts
$3,200
Never have I seen or heard of a c.1930 Crazy Quilt that was created
exactly the same as the original c.1885 Crazy Quilt. Yes, I am surmising
that this amazing piece of textile art was created by a woman who may
have made one twenty five years earlier.
Comprised of 42 blocks measuring 12" x 12". These blocks are not only
beautifully "pieced", but intricately embroidered. The mark of
excellence for a Victorian Crazy quilt is 100 different stitches...we
are well over that number. There are a number of miniature
embellishments..flowers, stars, etc. The backing is a pale beige cotton
sateen with the fabric turned over to the front and hand stitched down
with 3/8" showing as the binding.
What sets this apart from an 1885 Crazy Quilt are the fabrics. Here we
have the cheerful pastel colors of that era. We were past the many wars
and before the Great Depression. It was a time of joy and the colors
were happy! The wonderful circumstance is that these are the colors of
spring 2025...and we need happy! There is every pastel color available
in that era. The creator was a proficient and artistic
quilter...Luckily for us one that loved an almost lost art form.
