It is unimaginable the patience a woman can have to piece together, by
hand 5,776 ..7/8" squares! Usually when one sees a scrap bag quilt it
would have been created by a woman of lesser means. However in this case,
due to the double pink whole-cloth backing, we can assume that her
status in life was upper class. The whole-cloth backing could have been
unsed to create another quilt.
All piecing and quilting was executed by hand. The quilting pattern has
nothing to do with the design of the quilt. The design used is
concentric circles with the largest being 8" in diameter down to a 1-1/2"
circle..and are joined by 1-1/2" circles. There are 53 concentric
circles in all.
The fabrics used are mostly reds, whites and blues..there are no yellows
or orange used here. We have a smorgasbord of designs..calicoes,
stripes, plaids and dots. The main body of the quilt is surrounded with
a triangular border 2" in width which includes a 3/8" seperately hand
applied binding of the same double pink as the backing. Each triangle
measures 2-1/4" x 2-1/4" x 3-1/2" and brings this quilt to a higher level.
