CONJS11A Oak Leaves and Trees Quilt
c.1860
78 x 87 inches

$3,880

Striking is an understatement! This Indigo with a Chrome Orange and White calico design was created c.1860. As we have the maker's name and actual address her provenance can easily be traced. A point of information is that Thomas Jefferson brought the vegetable dying formula for Chrome Orange to this country in the 1700's...also the fact that true Indigo dye is one of only two early colors that will not fade in the sun..not that sun is good for any textile. In a study of society, this woman would have been from an affluent family being able to create a gorgeous piece of textile art from very expensive purchased fabric.

Created from 20 blocks each measuring 15" containing the appliqued and reverse appliqued Oak Leaf pattern. The applique and reverse applique stitches are tiny, tiny and perfect. There is a 9-1/2" border, on three sides, containing a line of 29 appliqued Oak Trees in the same Indigo Calico. There is a 1/4" separately applied binding finishing the quilt.

The quilting design is reminiscent of the coast ..Clam Shell quilting is seen in the border. This quilt is filled with symbolism. The Oak Tree stands for strength and long life..quilted in are hearts as this would have been a wedding present..and then there are the small double lined circles symbolizing the wedding rings.

The rest of the quilting is also unique with the designs joining the blocks instead of being purposely for an individual block. This design is concentric squares and then between each block is a 1/2" grid of a crosshatched design. All quilting stitches are very small and evenly executed.
