Finding c.1890's fabrics leads me to a much newer date than I would have guessed. I would have said c.1880. There are decades of earlier fabrics used in the creation of this graphic piece of textile art..and to me this should be hung, as the art it is..Yes, one can use it on a bed, but for the full effect...a special place on one's wall.

The design is optical illusion...one way there are six light colored Barn Raising Log Cabin designs, 10 half and 4 quarter ones of the same color way. the other would be visualizing the darker colored Barn Raising Log Cabin designs of which there are 9 whole patterns and 3 half patterns. The whole-cloth backing is a striking c.1870's brown striped pattern.

There are 168 6" blocks making up this quilt. The chimneys measure apx. 1-1/2" , the Logs are 3/4" wide , the binding is 1/8" turned from the back to the front.

As this is a summer quilt, without batting, one can use it all year..summer alone ..winter over other items like a down comforter. The quilting is a diagonal grid, on point 4-1/2" apart. This is a quilt for the amazing graphics, not the quilting.
