Yet another extraordinary original quilted piece of art. A quilt from
the estate of a gentleman with a discerning eye for the unique,
graphic, sophisticated and perfectly executed.
My feeling is that this quilt was created in Virginia. Of this I have no
actual proof. A masterpiece created from three early fabric designs. We
have stars..some eight pointed..some an unusual seven pointed, folk art
Pomegranates, and sashing. Stars and Pomegranates with stems and leaves
are all appliqued. A woman of means who, at an early date, owned a
treadle sewing machine. All applique work was done with a treadle sewing
machine. Seams and the 1/4" binding were pieced by machine. The binding
was also closed by machine, something I have never before seen. The long
sides have a Madder Dyed binding while the shorter sides have an over
dyed green binding.
This quilt was created in grid formation. The pomegranate blocks measure
15", the horizontal Star blocks measure 7" X 15", The vertical star
strips measure 6-1/2" X 91". All sashing is 1-3/4" in width. Quilting
design is all Echo quilting and actually gives the quilt a three
dimentional feeling. Quilting was executed by hand in lines aproximately
3/8" apart.
The fabric is a very rare Turkey Red print, over-dyed Green Calico, a
Madder Dyed minuscule star print and off white.
A textile that is meant as an important piece of wall Art for a lover
of origonal design textiles. It visually speaks for itsself!
