CONJS21 Baltimore Martha Washington Wreath Quilt
Embroidered Initials M.J.F. and dated 1847
77 x 95 inches
New England
$4,870
Comprised of 12 blocks measuring 16", an 11" border, a 1/4" separately
hand applied binding and finished with some of the most incredible
stippling I have ever seen. This woman loved to quilt..so much so that
she quilted right through the applique work!
There are two different applique Wreath Designs that really remind me of
Christmas. The very expensive fabrics used here are two Early Turkey Red
Calicos, an over-dyed green Calico and a very fine white. There is one
block containing a different Turkey Red Calico and a (must have been
used) over-dyed green that washed down to the first dye layer of
blue..We therefore know that this, when it was green, was made by
yellow over the blue coloring.
The applique stitches are almost invisible. The main body of the quilt
is quilted a Double line Diagonal Cross Hatch design 1/2"apart. The 11"
border is stippled!! Stippling means that there is so much quilting it
give the appearance of being stuffed. Surrounding the entire design is
an appliqued Vine Border 3" wide. Again, this woman who loved to quilt,
quilted right through them!
The backing is the same off white color in a linen fabric.
It took us almost three days to wash this quilt..it was one of the
dirtiest quilts I have ever had..Now, organically hand washed, it is so
clean and happy to be that way! Tag on the back gives names and more
information.
