CONJS7 "The Old Homestead" Schoolhouse Quilt
c.1855
65 x 73 inches
Baltimore, Maryland
$3,200 $2,895

The earliest known School House/Homestead quilt was created in the 1840's. I am dating this quilt by the fabric that it is at least 1855 or earlier. The fabric here is a true Indigo with a lighter Indigo dot. The more resent Indigo fabrics had a white dot and the even newer "indigo" color was the chemically dyed blues.

A stunning Schoolhouse/Homestead quilt that is a perfect size to hang as the textile art it is. Created from blocks measuring 11" square intersected with miniature playful nine patch blocks in a sashing which measures 2-1/2". Each miniature square in the nine patch measure 7/8". The blocks are on point visually creating a unique perspective of the Schoolhouse/homestead. The sashing is comprised of three strips ..two white and one Indigo Blue. Each strip in the sashing measures 7/8" in width. All pieces are hand pieced with tiny, tiny stitches, while all pieces are outline quilted with very small, even stitching. The white fabric is a very fine linen. In the most delicate embroidery stitching is the saying..."The Old Homestead"...another clue to what we call today a School House pattern was originally created to represent the homestead.

The quilt is finished with a 1/4" separately applied hand executed binding, in the same white fabric.

There are a few very small hard to see spots in the upper right corner that are lighter...therefore I am reducing the price to $2,895.
