CONPM1 Blue and White Trapunto Star Quilt with a Fringe

c.1820
81 x 91 inches

$12,000

This amazing, original design quilt was created c.1820. Sociologically we know this has come from an affluent family, the reason being that purchased fabric such as seen here in the Indigo dyed calico print, was so expensive only the affluent could afford it. Add to this fact the years of time and effort this skilled quilter put into the creation of this masterpiece.

The top was creatively hand pieced from blocks app 7” square. One white block alternates with a block print indigo and unusual white star pattern, so unusual, I can’t identify the name of the pattern. The entire quilt is edged with a 10” border and a 1-3/4” hand applied cotton fringe edging. The backing is a homespun linen, typical of this era, allowing the quilt maker the ability to separate fibers for the trapunto stuffing. The outside border has a meandering trapunto and corded vine all along the edge. One can tell that this was hand drawn because of the meandering vine variation. Every white block has a trapunto and corded wreath design. Every white area on this quilt is stippled which means that there is so much quilting that it looks stuffed or corded.

This museum quality quilt appears to be unused and has been passed down through the family.
