CONSD1 Pinwheel Quilt

c.1845
72 x 92 inches
New York
$3,400

Here at RMQ we always organically hand wash cotton and woolen quilts, therefore this exquisite quilt is no longer what is called a mint quilt. A mint quilt means never used and never washed.

The fabrics used are just visually enthralling! All of these early fabrics are vegetable dyed and date before c.1845. We have over-dyed green in a print I have never seen before in 40 years. There is a Prussian Blue print that is just so sophisticated. There are numerous, at least a dozen, brown prints artistically arranged.

Each pinwheel block measures 4" with the spokes measuring 2-3/4" X 2" X 2". Each spoke is outline quilted with all white areas being double line quilted. This quilting design is indicative of the 1840's. The binding is separately applied and measures 3/16".

All of these fabrics would have been extraordinarily expensive, which gives us sociological insight into the life of the quilter. By this I mean that the family was one of wealth, and the creator had the skill along with the time to work on this textile.

The dimensions of this quilt would fit perfectly on a queen size bed or just slightly over the sides of a king size bed.
