This mint condition Mennonite quilt is really a charm quilt! We
have searched and searched and cannot find a duplicate hexagon. I am
discussing the main body of the quilt as a charm quilt. Does the border
count..we are saying no! The inner 1-3/8" border does have 1 hexagon of
the same design. The 7-1/4" outer border is still of a different
fabric. There are, according to our count, 812 whole and half hexagons
of different fabrics!! Good grief that is quite a scrap-bag!
All hexagons have 1-3/4" sides and are hand pieced. This is the only
pieced pattern that must be hand pieced...maybe that is why one does not
see an Amish hexagon pieced quilt as they machine piece theirs. The
hexagons are all outline quilted with very small, even stitches. The
inner border is outline quilted with outer border crosshatch quilting
that actually follows the pattern. Binding measures 3/8" and is turned
over from the front to the back. Batting used here is very thin. The
backing is strip pieced in 7-1/2" strips which is a signature backing
of Mennonite quilts.
