CONSS8 Dated 1828 Embroidered Spread
c.1828
86 x 87 inches
Massachusetts
$5,600
In 40 years of buying and selling antique textiles I have never had the
opportunity to sell one of these, incredibly rare, embroidered woolen
spread.
This is also a study in Sociology as well as textiles. The family that
this came from was one of affluence. The reason that I am saying this is
due to the facts of the homespun woolen fabrics, the sophistication of
the textile as well as the time to do such embroidery work. Add to this
the fact that the family did not need to wear it out in use. This
spread has been used as can be noted with the darning work on, what
were, worn spots. There are a very few moth holes..one can be seen on
the closeup of the date. I have hand washed this amazing piece with an
organic product...no soap residue and now clean to use!
This woolen coverlet was constructed from two strips of 38-1/2 inch
homespun woolen, then a strip of 4-1/2" was added on three sides to
create the needed width. The outer seams were embellished over with
very sophisticated embroidery reminiscent of the swag drapes that
certainly were in their home. The main body of the spread is embroidered
in alternating rows. A row of embroidered Rose Hips and leaves, then the
alternating rows are embroidered with what looks like to me a fancy
button stitched on. The dyes are true indigo while the homespun woolen
is natural color. Indigo takes on different shades depending upon how
many times the item is dipped in the bath in Indigo dye.
The over the top bonus is the fact that the creator dated her piece and added
initials.
Now hand washed and ready to be sent, with free shipping, for your approval.
