F801 Signature Block Fragment

c.1855
42 x 43 inches

$1,100

This amazing little quilt is a finished part of a larger earlier one. All the quilt is original with a binding added of the same date fabric.

The signature block was usually created by groups as a gift for someone moving, a wedding present or a present for something special. Usually a signature was created in the center square of each block. This quilt was created by an affluent family member just because she loved the pattern. I say affluent because the fabrics used here would have been very costly.

Each block measures 11" X 11", sashing measures 3-1/2". the separately applied binding measures 3/8". The center square, usually where a signature would appear, measures 2-1/4" square. There is not a top row on this piece as it originally was created showing what was the top of the bed. The amazing array of fabrics date from C.1840 to C 1850. This is why I dated the quilt c.1855. A natural color linen backing, typical of the date and status, was used. There is outline quilting and diagonal quilting of average ability...but, the graphics and fabrics are amazing!!

This fabulous little piece can be used either as a throw or a wonderful wall hanging. All organically hand washed and ready to be sent, with free shipping for your approval.
