Q8103 Barn Raising Log Cabin in Wool Challis Quilt
c.1860
80 x 90
Lancaster, PA
$2,600

This quilt was beautifully machine pieced in a deep, rich red (Turkey Red?) and a slightly off white, then many years later beautifully hand quilted. The pieced top, I feel, was made around c.1870 from a much earlier pattern not common to that era. We know that the top was quilted later by the scalloped edges not seen on 19th century quilts. The quilting designs, beautifully executed here, are designs that feel more like 20th century.
Construction consists of 14" square blocks, 6-1/2" horizontal sashing, 8-1/2 " vertical sashing and finished with a 1/4" applied slightly off white binding. The pieced blocks are quilted 3/4" apart on the diagonal..the sashing has extensive vine, rope and medallion quilting.
Not only a beautiful bed quilt, but also a graphically wonderful quilt for your wall. This unused, organically washed quilt is ready to be sent for your in home approval.
