Q9310 Star of Bethlehem with Tumbling Blocks Border Quilt
c.1850
87 x 89 inches
New York or Pennsylvania
$3,900
Exquisite, stunning, sophisticated, over the top quilting, graphically
wonderful, yet visually comforting....and clean! This simply sums up
this amazing Quilt!
There are 1,400 diamonds with 2" sides ranging in date from c.1830's to
c.1850'S. The Star measures 79" from tip to opposite tip. The very
unusual Tumbling Blocks border measures 7" in width, with visually one
tumbling block appears to be going in each direction. We know that all
the work was executed by hand with some of the most elaborate quilting I
have ever seen. Each diamond is outline quilted while the white areas
between the points of the stars are so heavily quilted that parts seem to be
stippled..meaning stuffed, while some look corded. Designs include
Medallions, flowers, leaves. parallel lines, elaborate floral wreaths
and more.
The expense of the fabrics plus the amount of time taken for this
quilting lends us to surmise that the artist who created this quilt came
from an affluent family. This stunning quilt was possibly her mark of
excellence!
A few of the Turkey Red diamonds have been restored, not due to wear, but
due to "pitting". This means that some of the printed "dots" were gone.
The fabric used for the restoration is the same date or earlier, which
you undoubtedly cannot locate! We have washed this quilt for two days
with an organic washing product. This method is totally safe for the
fabrics. The reason the washing took so long is that the quilt was so
dirty, and organic products take longer when just soaking. You can still
see some very, very faint shadowing, which you really need to look very,
very closely to see.
Perfect for a queen size bed, or the most exquisite textile art for your
wall. Always sent on approval with free shipping.
