Q9323 Nine Patch Irish Chain Quilt
c. 1875
31 x 42 inches
New England
$1,800
This is the best Indigo and white crib I have ever had the pleasure to purchase.
An original condition Indigo and white crib quilt is scarcer Than "hen's
teeth"! Completely hand pieced and hand quilted. There is a separately
applied 1/4" binding.
There is a double border that measures 2-3/4" inches.
The first 1-7/8" is white and quilted in a cross hatch 3/4
inch pattern. The remaining 7/8 inch is comprised of triangles
measuring 2-1/8" x 1-3/8" x 1-3/8". They are alternating with white
triangles. Each triangle is outline quilted 1/8" inside each seam. The
nine patch squares measure approx 4" x 4", with each 1-1/4" square
being quilted 1/8" all around the inside. The joining white blocks
are quilted in the same manner. The large white blocks measure approx
3-5/8" and are quilted with a cross hatch design 3/4" apart.
This quilt appears to be in unused condition. The perfect condition binding
fabric of the same design is a lighter shade of indigo, and may have been
taken from a used textile, probably a dress. The back of the quilt is a
solid white fine linen.
