Q9324 Stump Work Quilt
c. 1915
66 x 66 inches
Pennsylvania
$1,400
Stump Work was executed by the Amish and the Mennonite women..However, I
cannot prove that this is one of those pieces.
Created on woolen suiting fabrics and with an embroidered outline
creating four corner blocks, typical of Lancaster Amish. Again these are
other clues, not proof of a cultural origin. The entire front of the
quilt is woolen, including the actual stump work designs. Most of the
fabrics are 19th century, however the pink stump work's yarn is
newer..that is my clue to a newer date.
Comprised of blocks measuring 7-1/2 square and outlined with perfect,
concise embroidery stitches. There are 25 Stump Work designs created
from a variety of woolen yarn colors. A border measuring 6-7/8 surrounds
the main body of the quilt. There is a 3/8" separately applied binding,
a size more Mennonite. The backing is a cozy brown on brown flannel
plaid. This folksy woolen quilt appears never to have been used and
packed away so carefully.
