Q9327 Variation of Gem Blocks Quilt
c. 1880
76 x 80 inches
New England
$2,200
An original adaptation of this design creating a quilt that is visually
fun and folksy. A perfectly executed design that was embellished so as
to create a folk art rendition of a pieced pattern. The wonderful
borders of the diamond in a square pattern take this quilt to a higher
level. The fabrics are a wonderful combination of wool and wool Challis.
Created from blocks which measure 10" X 10", sashing is 2" in width
with the joining blocks measuring 2" X 2". All piecing was executed by
machine; the embellishment details are hand created from woolen yarns.
The outside Square on Point measures apx. 7" on each side with the inner
square having 3-1/4" sides. The fabrics give a warm cozy feeling due to
the colors used. There is a 1/4" separately applied binding in the same
black and tan gingham plaid.
There is a border measuring 6" in width and (as I stated) is a pieced
Diamond in a Square Design. The borders were created from two fabrics..a
plaid in muted greens, blues, black and burgundy. The fabrics
surrounding these pieces are gray wool.
This quilt appears to be unused.
